'Oz The Great And Powerful' Debut Poster Lands

Oz Great Powerful Banner

By Meg Malone

Things are stormy around the Emerald City, as Walt Disney Pictures' newly released the poster for Sam Raimi's "Oz The Great and Powerful" reveals.

Back in June, the first image of James Franco as the titular character hit the web, but the character is relegated to a barely visible balloon passenger here. Instead, the focus seems to be on the more on recognizable imagery from the 1939 "The Wizard of Oz," including the blustery tornado and the yellow brick road. The glittering Land of Oz off in the distance and the Wizard's hot air balloon sailing in are a few spots of bright color in an otherwise pretty dark palette.

Disney's official plot summary explains that Franco plays ethically questionable circus man Oscar Diggs, who is whisked from Kansas to the Land of Oz where he meets three witches who are skeptical of the newcomer. Dealing with the issues of good and evil in this new place, Diggs undergoes personal changes in the process of becoming the one later known as the Wizard of Oz.

While it's great to get a sense of the world from the poster, we're still aching to see more images of the cast, especially the witches, played by an impressive trio of Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. Hopefully if we click our heels three times and focus really hard, more images from the film will make their way to us for Comic-Con

"Oz The Great and Powerful" is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013.
