Throughout its development and filming, J.J. Abrams' sequel to "Star Trek" has kept the director's tradition of secrecy alive. Only a handful of photos leaked from the set, we're no closer to knowing the story, and no one is really that sure who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing.
Understandably, there was an outcry from trekkies when the line-up for this year's San Diego Comic did not include a panel for the yet-to-be-named "Trek" sequel. When would the answers come?
Last week some journalists spoke with two of the key players, co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman and star Chris Pine, during the junket for "People Like Us" to see if they could offer up some reassuring words for fans. Neither was completely forthcoming'as expected'but both had plenty of vague things to say about the sequel.
Kurtzman spoke with ComingSoon.net about the intentions of Abrams and the rest of the team when it came time to make a sequel, which in a way explains the absence from Comic-Con. "Part of why we delayed a year was because we didn't want to rush it," he said. "Just because we feel very beholden to the franchise and we feel very protective of it and the worst thing we can do is to put it out there before we felt like we were ready and we were still working on the story."
When Collider had spoken with Damon Lindelof for "Prometheus," he described the new set for the USS Enterprise, which consists of complete, walkable hallways. Kurtzman compliment Abrams and the production design team for the concept when he spoke with the blog. "J.J. was brilliant, in building the sets that way, because what he wanted to do was be able to play whole scenes without a cut, as you were literally moving through this huge, huge ship," he said. "Just to walk on the set was incredible."
Pine spoke mostly in far-flung tangents with Collider, touched briefly on how the IMAX sequences will be akin to "Ghost Protocol," but paid respect to Kurtzman, Orci, and Lindelof's script. "With the second one, people will find that it's the mythic structure, done really well. The character journeys are just perfect mythic structures," he said. "They do it so well. The journeys with the characters will be really great, and the explosions and set pieces are going to knock people out of their seats."
