'Elysium' And 'RoboCop' Release Dates Delayed Six Months

Elysium

Bad news, Neill Blomkamp fans: We're going to have to wait even longer to find out what all the fuss is about in "Elysium."

Sony Pictures has pushed back the science fiction movie from its planned March 1, 2013 release date to a late summer August 9 debut, Entertainment Weekly reports. This isn't that surprising, as we haven't seen much from the project and it's planned release was only five and a half months away.

By opening in August, "Elysium" will be opening itself up to a wider audience and hopefully will be able to capitalize on summer box office revenues. But August has been a tricky release slot in previous years, so the film could also get lost at the end of the blockbuster season.

This news has ripple effects on another movie in Sony's line-up. "RoboCop" will now be moved from its planned August 9 release date to February 7, 2014 -- a big jump, considering the Jose Padilha-directed remake has been getting some buzz, both positive and negative, thanks to its great casting and intriguing set photos.

In other news, Sony has announced that "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" will come out on September 27, 2013. That time slot has proved to be great for animated films this year, with movies like "Paranorman" and "Hotel Transylvania" doing well in their August/September release dates.
