'The Expendables 3' Producer Wants Nic Cage, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford

Expendables 2

Did you think you were excited about this Friday's release of "The Expendables 2"? Well just wait until you hear who plans to join the cast of "The Expendables 3."

In a conversation with Total Film, producer Avi Lerner let slip that Nicolas Cage is already on board for a role in the third "Expendables" movie. In addition, Lerner is in talks with Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford about joining the film, is considering bringing Mickey Rourke back for more and plans to start discussions with Wesley Snipes about coming on board a future film once he is released from prison next summer. If even one of those prospective stars joins in addition to Cage, we're looking at some serious star power being added to number three. Our minds will melt if we try to imagine all four of them joining in addition to Cage.

Since we're on the topic of listing off every awesome action star who should join the crew of these films, we've decided to compile five other actors who deserve spots alongside Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.

Dwayne Johnson
How has The Rock not been in "The Expendables" series already? He's certainly a big money grab, and also one of the biggest action stars to come out of the past two decades. Maybe they're saving him as a back up plan if interest in the series starts to go away (hey there, "Fast Five" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation").

Kurt Russell
If we're looking back to find some of the best action stars of the '80s and '90s, we've got to turn to Kurt Russell. Not only did the man redefine cool in "Escape from New York," "The Thing" and "Tango & Cash," but he's also shown he's not afraid to have fun with his own legacy. Just look at Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" if you need more proof of that.

Mel Gibson
Sure, Mel Gibson is still working on repairing his image, but we think it's about time Hollywood moves past that enough for him to poke fun at his action hero roots. The man's in "Machete Kills," for goodness sake. And with a filmography including "Mad Max," "Lethal Weapon" and "Braveheart," Gibson has earned himself a spot among his peers in these movies.

Sigourney Weaver
Isn't it time a woman joined forces with "The Expendables"? If anyone defines female badassdom, it's Sigourney Weaver. Linda Hamilton was narrowly cut from the list, if only because it would be a bit too much of a "Terminator" reunion on "The Expendables 3" set. But between the "Alien" series, "Ghostbusters" and "Avatar," no one does a kick ass female lead quite like Weaver.

Tom Cruise
Of all the big '80s action stars, the one most notably lacking from "The Expendables" line-up is Tom Cruise. Now that he's got his groove back thanks to "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," it seems like it's time he joins in on the fun the "Expendables" team is having. And besides, someone needs to be shorter than Stallone in real life.
