Maya Rudolph, Steve Carell And More Head 'Way, Way Back'

Carell Rudolph

Jim Rash, the man better known as Dean Pelton on "Community" and his writing partner, Nat Faxon, have been at work crafting their directorial debut, "The Way, Way Back." The duo are hot off their Oscar win for the screenplay for "The Descendants," so it should come as no surprise that actors are flocking to their upcoming film. But as the casting news flows in, it sort of feels like Rash and Faxon have read our diary entries about our fantasy comedy casts and sought to make our dreams come true.

Deadline is reporting that Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry and Amanda Peet have joined the cast of "The Way, Way Back." In addition, Sam Rockwell, Liam James, Allison Janney and "Little Miss Sunshine" costars Steve Carell and Toni Collette have come on board the project. Faxon and Rash also star in the movie as a pair of waterpark employees. This is seriously a movie cast made in indie heaven.

From what we know of the plot, it follows a teen (James) who "comes into his own" while working at a water park over the summer. He becomes close with the park's manager (Rockwell), who helps him deal with the drama caused by his uninvolved mother (Collette) and cheating, jerk step-dad (Carell). Apparently Carell's character likes to "drink, do drugs and carouse with other women," so it will be fun seeing the typically goofy actor get to stretch his acting muscles.

In a way, this sounds a bit like "Adventureland," except it will likely have more of a dramatic focus. Deadline is describing the movie as a "comedic drama," which sounds a bit like the approach "The Descendants" took to deal with its serious issues. The movie starts shooting in Massachusetts on Monday, and we can't wait to hear more about the flick once we get closer to its (unannounced) release date.
